Short for Identifier or Identification. In many networking protocols an ID is an integer number of N-bits (common values of N are 16 and 32). An identifier may also be a string. a Random ID, if unguessable and of enough bits, can be used as a form of authentication in request-response protocols, assuming that the attacker can't see the request (so can't reply with a matching ID).
