C is an high-level programming language. Most software today is written in C. Hackers usually like C because it's essential and flexible, and allows for high-level abstractions compared to other programming languages so near to the machine. For non-system programming, and in general when to deal with low-level stuff is not important and speed is not the first concern, [Very High Level Languages] can be a better idea.
